TOOLS NEEDED:

  1. Flat Blade screwdriver

  2. 8,10,13,17, 19 mm wrench

  3. 8,10,13,17,19mm socket 3/8 or 1/2 inch drive

  4. 1/2 or 3/8 drive ratchet

  5. Engine dolly (not required but VERY helpful)

  6. Floor Jack (4000 lbs. capacity)

  7. 2 jack stands

  8. 2 Wheel Chocks

  9. Tire iron or "Tire Star"

  10. A second person (very helpful, but not required)

Procedure for removal

  1. Disconnect Negative and positive Battery terminal connections as shown on Battery Removal (steps 1 and 2 only).

  2. Be sure to remove all electrical connections on the engine; coil wire, Generator/Alternator wires

  3. Tie up all electrical connections out of the way.

  4. Disconnect: accelerator cable and put 8mm barrel nut on accelerator return spring (so you do not lose it).

  5. Disconnect: Fuel line and plug line with an appropriate sized bolt or hose plug.

  6. Lift up the VW using Rear Lifting Procedure.

  7. Lift the VW up high enough to clear the engine from the rear about 30 inches (76.2 cm) (as measured from ground to apron.).

  8. Remove the engine oil using the Oil Change procedure (Steps 2 - 4 only)

  9. Once the jack stands are in position, lower the jack and place the jack under the engine oil pan. Make sure the head of the jack is centered on the oil sump cover.

  10. Remove the two lower nuts from the transmission to engine. Then remove the upper two Bolts.

  11. You will have to rock the engine back and forth to get it off of the pilot shaft

  12. Slowly lower the engine to the ground.

  13. Slide the engine onto plywood sheet, cardboard (GENTLY) or an engine dolly

  14. Then slide out the engine from under the VW.

  15. BEST: Place engine on an engine stand.  Otherwise leave of plywood to prevent spills or engine damage.

  16. Only disassemble the engine indoors (but use of the Living room is probably not what your spouse has in mind)
