IRS or Independent Rear Suspension.   Dates back to the 1930's, when the German government wanted IRS for use on military vehicles like the Kubelwagen (type 82) and the "people's car" or Volkswagen.  Volkswagen did not start putting IRS on any of the types until August of 1967.

IRS is a stable suspension system that requires all parts to be in good condition to function properly.  You should inspect all parts of the suspension system every six months (Spring and Fall).  In the event that you find any deteriorated parts or components then R&R or remove and replace (also Rip and Replace!)  those parts.

The most important parts to examine and inspect are the CV joints and boots.  Make sure that the boots are not cracked or split.  Do not attempt to repair a damaged CV boot.  Just remove it and replace it.
