You will need a FLAT surface to complete
this repair for your safety.
READ ALL OF
THIS PROCEDURE SEVERAL TIMES SO THAT YOU UNDERSTAND IT. DO NOT
PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUT OF ORDER. THIS WILL RESULT IN DEATH
OR SERIOUS INJURY.
Slowly and carefully loosen the pan bolts
in a crisscross pattern.
Place a jack directly under the pan.
Leave a slight gap between the pan and the jack to prevent puncturing the
pan.
Remove the bolts from the rear of the pan
then slowly work back to the front of the transmission.
Allow the old fluid to drain out into the
drain pan, slowly. Otherwise, the old fluid will spill allover the
ground.
After all bolts are removed, drain
remaining fluid out of the pan.
Remove the old gasket from pan.
Remove the old filter by gently pulling on
the center old filter.
Clean out as much old fluid as possible.
Clean out the pan of fluid and sludge.
We removed the modulator at the same time
since the fluid was out. The modulator only has one bolt on the
holding collar and the vacuum line. When replacing a modulator, also
replace the vacuum line hose.
Most replacement gaskets require no RTV or
adhesive.
Install the new filter.
Place the new gasket on the pan and
position the pan for reinstallation
Insert bolts at each of the "corners" but
do not tighten.
Then insert the remaining bolts.
Tighten the bolts to
no more than 13 foot-pounds USING a torque wrench.
After tightening all pan bolts to proper
torque, then fill with transmission fluid through the dipstick tube.
Initially fill using 3 quarts, then check
the fluid level.
Start the engine and warm up the
transmission to 190 degrees F.
Continue filling to full mark while hot.
Check for leaks and drips from
transmission.
After filling completely, place brake on
and engage gearshift to R reverse, allow it to engage then move to D Drive.
For about the first 5 minutes drive the
vehicle slowly (no more than 20 mph).
Recheck fluid level, add if necessary.
