Oil Leaks

Slow leaks are not unusual for your VW, it is just marking its spot.  But a fast leak is very bad and will cause eventual premature engine failure. Typically, a new or rebuilt engine should not leak, unless the rebuilt was not done correctly.  Over time, the engine can develop leaks.  Improper or lack of Maintenance (for example: not changing the oil at the proper interval) is the leading cause of engine oil leaks.

"Well, my VW is leaving enough oil to fill a supertanker.  Where in the world could my oil be leaking from?"  The answer is several places. Below is a list of the common culprits of engine oil leaks, most common to least common.

  1. Valve cover gaskets.

  2. Oil sump cover gasket

  3. Oil drain plug

  4. Push rod tubes and/or seals

  5. Flywheel oil seal

  6. Flywheel O-ring

  7. Alternator/generator stand gaskets

  8. Fuel pump stand gaskets

  9. Distributor O-ring

  10. Crankshaft pulley counter cut threads (clogging)

  11. At the Case Halves (improper use of gasket cement or defective case halves)
