TOOLS NEEDED:

  1. 3/8 drive Ratchet

  2. 3/8 drive extensions

  3. spark plug socket

  4. "go no-go" feeler gauge

PARTS NEEDED:

  1. 4 W8AC spark plugs (Wacky)

Procedure for replacement

  1. Verify the gap of all new plugs.  Check with feeler gauge for 0.026 inch or 0.60 mm; 0.027 inch or 0.70mm for fuel injection engines

  2. Open the Deck Lid and gently disconnect the spark plug wires, keeping them separate from each other.

  3. Using the 3/8 ratchet, extensions and spark plug socket, remove each spark plug.

  4. Note the condition of each plug on each cylinder.  If your plugs look like these (which are gas fouled), Then you will also need to adjust the carburetor

  5. Before reinstalling the new plugs, put a drop of oil on the threads.

  6. To prevent cross threading, take each plug by the top and slowly screw it in. Note: this is very difficult, but so is replacing a head when you strip out threads!

  7. Then take the spark plug socket and place it over the top of the plug until you hear or feel a click or a suction.

  8. Once all of the plugs are reinstalled and tightened down, then push down each of the plug wires until you hear them click.

  9. After connecting the plug wires, restart the engine and listen to make sure the firing order is correct and nothing is cross wired. If your engine does not start then you have cross wired the spark plug wires.  This is especially true if your VW backfires.

  10. Then Close the deck lid and enjoy the new sound of your VW.
