The procedure for removal of the starter is fairly straightforward.

READ THE BENTLEY or HAYNES MANUAL FIRST!

You will need a FLAT surface to complete this repair for your safety.

READ ALL OF  THIS PROCEDURE SEVERAL TIMES SO THAT YOU UNDERSTAND IT.  DO NOT PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUT OF ORDER.  THIS WILL RESULT IN DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY.

TOOLS NEEDED:

  1.  15, 17 and 19mm combination wrenches

  2. 13mm 3/8 drive socket

  3. 19mm deep socket (1/2 inch drive)

  4. 1/2 drive break over bar

  5.  3/8 or 1/2 drive ratchet

  6.  Multiple shop towels (least 4)

  7.  Floor Jack (4000 lbs. capacity)

  8. 2 jack stands

 

Procedure for removal

  1. Disconnect Negative terminal first, then remove the Positive terminal from battery.

  2. Open Deck Lid

  3. Jack up the VW using Lifting the right side Procedure

  4. Release ENGINE mounting bolt.  It is the one that is closest to Cylinder #1

  5. Disconnect High current and Low Current wires

  6. Remove the lower nut.

  7. Remove the starter.

Now go to the procedure of reinstallation of the Starter.
