more info on swing axles is forthcoming

Swing Axle suspension was used by Volkswagen from 1934 to August of 1967, but Mexican Built VW beetles had swing axles until the end of production in July of 2003.  Dave saw one of these Mexican beetles at a convenience store in 2003.  It was a 2000 year model with a swing axle in it.

Advantages and disadvantages

Swing Axles have a couple of disadvantages.  The first and most dangerous occurs when you take a corner to fast.  The tire will tuck under the VW an will throw it in to a roll over.  The second disadvantage causes the tires to wear unevenly, good tread on the inside of the tire and almost bald on the outside.

Swing axles do have an advantage.  They are very durable.  This is one reason that you see them on Baja Bugs.  They are more suited for off-road use than on pavement.
