Parts needed:
(1) forward transmission mount that fits your
year of pan. Two if you can afford it.
Procedure for removal
Chalk front wheels
! The mounting bracket MUST NOT be bent
(especially if using a Urethane mount).
(a) If it is bent, it MUST be brought back into
dimension or the Urethane mount WILL BREAK!
Refer to battery disconnect page.
Disconnect Shifter Union with 8 point , 1/4" drive,
8mm or 5/16" socket. If "set screw" is stuck do not force it, use
penetrating oil and try later until it finally breaks free.
If this is a Beetle remove rear cooling tin at the
crank shaft pulley.
Disconnect accelerator cable with 8mm nut driver.
Place rolling hydraulic floor jack at the lower
drain plug of the the transmission and raise it until it just makes
contact with the transmission.
On the engine side of the filter disconnect the fuel
line. P. S. some fuel my run out of the open end from the
carburetor(s).
****
DO NOT DISCONNECT CLUTCH CABLE***** ; leave it alone
or it will come off of the clutch pedal hook.
Using the 17mm "wiggler", 3/8" drive unscrew the
outer nuts of the forward transmission mount.
Using the 27mm 12point 1/2" drive unscrew the
"transom" bolts; the engine may drop down a little.
! BY HAND, ( be careful not to scrape the
transmission bracket threads) pull engine back, approximately 2" or
50mm: Most people use exhaust pipe #1 and #4.
Using wooden wedges between the "forks" and the
"transom" spread the distance until the forward transmission mount
clears the studs of the mounting bracket. The tension on your clutch
cable is ok as long as you can still depress the clutch pedal a
little.
Unscrew the two remaining nuts and take the mount
out.
